WHAT DOES DRUM LINE AND FITNESS HAVE IN COMMON? Drum Line has grown into a “sport of the arts” with marching, drill, movement, music, and visuals. In order to execute this art form, fitness is addressed and encouraged. Help Rex Putnam High School Music Boosters send the drum line to their first ever competition. Over the last 30+ years music in public schools has suffered severe reductions and wholesale eliminations. Despite authentic research and evidence that music education enhances the academic side of K-12 education, teachers, programs, access to instruments and competition opportunities have continued to be on the chopping block of public education across the nation. Right here in Milwaukie Oregon, it is no different. Fortunately, enough musicians, parents, and music enthusiasts are mobilizing to organize an active fun family event that not only helps support the Rex Putnam KINGSMEN THUNDER Drum Line program (est. 2009) but also helps bolster the gaps in funding for these vital programs. It is now time for the KINGSMEN THUNDER to step into the larger arena of competition at WGI (Winter Guard Int’l), an established organization that provides entertainment, judging criteria, clinics, and educationally sound curriculum for the marching and percussion arts.
SOMETHING LOUD IS HAPPENING IN MILWAUKIE:
Everyone LOVES a drum line! Loud, exciting, and with pageantry, it is an enduring part of our history and culture, and has risen to become one of the most elaborate and athletic marching percussion art forms today. Until now, there has not been any formal drum line program in the N. Clackamas School District. Ever. In fact this is the first official drum line program in N. Clackamas to ever compete on the circuit of WGI (Winter Guard Int’l, a regional and national organization that exists for the marching percussion/color guard/ and marching band arts). WE ARE MAKING HISTORY! Any high schools that have marching programs at all, bring in percussion specialists to help with the band program. This is true nationally and internationally. Enter René Ormae-Jarmer, RPHS alum and professional percussionist. In 2009, after doing many clinics in the schools and being an established percussion teacher, she started the KINGSMEN THUNDER Drum Line Program. The drum line performs at band concerts, fundraisers for other schools, businesses in the area (Airstream, Costco) and is wildly popular. The drum line percussionists also make up the backbone of the RPHS band when they march the Starlight Parade, representing the community. For 6 years, the drum line, which is not financially supported by the district, was a stand-alone battery (meaning no movement, no uniforms, very basic visuals). It is now time to give the Rex Putnam drummers a chance to compete and elevate their skill sets to include movement, pageantry, and more sophisticated music. This cannot be done with out grant-writing and fundraising. This fundraiser is CRUCIAL to raising funds to enhance the drum line program that so many folks in the community including businesses, event coordinators, and school district administrators ask to play. The drum line is wildly popular and deserves a chance to compete FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME. Come to this fundraiser, workout with a certified personal trainer, buy raffle tickets, get a massage or sample acupuncture. The owner of My Path Wellness, Mike Thomas, has two sons in the middle school and elementary school system in N. Clackamas and is generously offering to help the drum line meets its fundraising goal by opening up his business and generosity. He is an experienced and talented athletic and personal trainer and wants to see the “sport of the arts” activity of the drum line continue to grow. *BOTH René and Mike are available for interviews for print, radio, and online social media to help promote this fun, entertaining, event. Support the arts! Support your local drummer as they continue to give back to your community through entertainment and musicianship.
